Pete Herrick Update

On October 1, 2005, Andy Pujol attended a fundraiser at the Columbia County Fairgrounds in Lake City, Florida. The event was part of a grass roots effort to help Petty Officer Pete Herrick, a Naval Reservist, who was permanently injured in Iraq. For his efforts, Herrick has received numerous medals and awards, including The Purple Heart, Global War On Terrorism, Good Conduct, Expert Rifleman, National Defense, and the Navy and Marine Achievement Medal -- with Valor in combat.

The event was part of a community-wide effort to help build Pete and his family a new home and to purchase a vehicle that will accommodate his special needs. The day included non-stop entertainment, a car show, an impressive motorcycle display, food and refreshments, local, state and military dignitaries, contests, raffles, games, auctions, sky divers and much more. The goal was to raise at least $100,000. That amount was topped as the final tally was $115,000.

Andy was able to meet with Pete, his wife Diana and their two children, Shayla and Drew, who spent the day speaking with supporters and thanking them for their help. The highlight of the day was Andy presenting the Herrick family with an oversized, promotional check for $65,000!

Despite their misfortune, the Herrick family continues to exhibit an extremely positive attitude. Their enthusiasm and zest for life is infectious. They are remarkable, small-town people.

Tommy Waters Custom Homes Inc., a family business in Gainesville, Florida since 1957, will be building a home for the family of Pete Herrick in Fort White, Florida. The town, which is named for a former Seminole War fort, was founded in 1870 and is located 30 miles northwest of Gainesville. Tommy Waters hopes to have the Herrick’s home completed by Christmas 2006.
